Forty-four percent of kids ages 6-12 expressed interest in the iPad, up from 31 percent in 2010. Only 30% of kids want an iPod Touch, and 27% want an iPhone. For kids ages 13-and-up, iPads still top the wish list, with 24% this year, up from 18% last year. The second most desired item is a computer - 18% of kids ages 13-and-up want it more than an iPad. Yet last year, computers were the top most desired item for this age group after televisions, smartphones and then iPads. This would only include those that run the Android Market and other Google products however, something that is not a prerequisite for Android devices.

Meanwhile, the iPad has officially sold somewhere around 40 million units. According to Pyramid’s forecasts, by 2016, smartphone sales will account for 46% of all cell phone sales across the region.

While smartphone penetration is lower in Latin America than in other regions, it seems that the category has started to take off. According to Juliana Gomez, Senior Analyst at Pyramid Research, “Latin America’s smartphone sales picked up the pace in 2010 when smartphone sales in the region grew 117% and total handset sales grew 17%.” As a result, the share of smartphones among total sales has increased and will continue to do so, according to this graph:

On the operators’ side, smartphones are a huge opportunity to increase their revenues in a market where the mobile penetration already surpassed 100%. In this context, data represent a growing source of profit for mobile operators – see below the example of America Movil:

Since smartphone adoption is in their own interest, operators have come up with solutions to make these devices more appealing to their customers. One of them was to offer pre-paid 3G data plans, in a region where 82% of plans are pre-paid, according to Pyramid Research.

As in other markets, mobile companies have also worked on offering a larger variety of subsidized smartphone models. It’s no accident that operators’ strategy focuses on affordability. As Gomez pointed out, Latin Americans are heavy users of social networks and most of them would like to own a smartphone as long as they can afford it.

As a result, the research firm expects smartphone sales in Latin America to grow 75.7% in 2011, equaling 31m smartphone units sold and US$6bn in revenue.

http://thenextweb.com/la/2011/11/15/smartphone-sales-taking-off-in-latin-america/#

Original Page: http://wwwhatsnew.com/2011/11/03/comparando-google-plus-con-facebook-en-una-infografia/

Shared from Read It Later

You’ve got a great idea for a product or business, but you don’t know where to start. You don’t know any VCs or angels, maybe your company isn’t right for an incubator, but you want firsthand advice from experts on how to proceed. While there are tons of amazing online resources for entrepreneurs and there’s some terrific expert advice on Quora on an array of entrepreneurial subjects, little of this information is personalized.

This is one example of the value proposition of Evisors, a startup that is building a marketplace of expert advice. Founded in May 2010 by Harvard Business School grads Fredrik Marø, Marc Weiner, Dan Levy, and Wharton grad Christine Apold, Evisors offers on-demand advice, allowing consumers to go beyond their own personal and professional networks to search its database of experienced experts to directly schedule consultations.

The startup soft launched its marketplace in September 2010 behind the idea that cold calls and emails are often ineffective ways to build one’s expert network, and getting answers to your tough questions is far more difficult than it should be. In its early stages, as one can imagine, career and graduate school advice was Evisor’s first big seller, and the startup worked to bring former professors and admissions officers into its fold to give young people their industry expertise as well as advice on job hunting strategies, interview practice, resume and cover letter help, business consulting and career management, etc.

The Evisors network has since expanded to include three main categories: Admissions, business, and career experts, which now counts CEOs, entrepreneurs, investors, experienced professionals and business consultants as members of its marketplace.

Earlier this month, Evisors further expanded its offerings to officially include an entrepreneurship network in an effort to give startups seeking expert guidance access to hundreds of entrepreneurs and business advisors. To find an expert, customers use the marketplace’s simple search interface to identify relevant experts, view their profiles and evaluate them based on their qualifications, user reviews, ratings, availability, and, of course, their hourly rates.

Once a user has selected an expert, they can schedule a phone consultation or submit an email inquiry. Experts set their own rates, which range from $30 to more than $500 per consultation depending on things like length of the session, the expert’s education level, career background and experience, and so on.

The startup’s entrepreneurship network features startup experts like investor and author Dave Berkus (best known for his “Berkus Method” of evaluating early-stage investments) who has participated in more than 80 tech investments over the last decade — as well as David Ronick, co-founder of the online startup incubator, Upstart Bootcamp.

Most of these experts, Evisors CEO Fredrik Maro told us, have full-time jobs, so the marketplace is not a primary money-making tool for first time business consultants. Really, it gives industry veterans an opportunity to give back to the community, interact with likeminded people, and share their hard-earned knowledge. That being said, the marketplace provides a nice complement to their salaries, with a few experts having earned over $10,000 over the course of the year.

For those looking for expert advice, there is also the opportunity to take advantage of free consultations, which are primarily a result of new experts joining the community who have been vetted by the Evisors staff but have not yet received a significant feedback rating.

Maro said that he sees Evisors as the next link in the chain after Quora, providing those in need of advice with a middle ground between the opinionators and, say, the mentorship (and equity-taking) of startup incubators. Maro also pointed out that Evisors eats its own dogfood, too — the startup has been using the advice of its experts to help grow its own business. And so far, this method of attack seems to be working, as the startup has seen the number of consultations sold in its marketplace grow nearly tenfold over the same period last year.

Up until recently, Evisors has been bootstrapped, but today the company is officially announcing that it has raised $600,000 from Nebula Ventures (the VC arm of Universum Global, which owns sites like wetfeet.com and doostang.com), as well as angel investors like New York Angels.

Besides taking a small percentage of consultation sales, the startup is also monetizing through affiliate partnerships in which third parties host Evisors widgets to showcase experts relevant to their audiences. These sites earn a referral fee for each consultation sold that emanates from their platforms.

Through its strategic partnership with Nebula Ventures qua Universum, Evisors has partnered with job sites Wetfeet.com and Doostang, as well as company review site Glassdoor.com, among others.

With partnerships and new funding in its pocket, Evisors is setting its sights on becoming the online destination to get subject matter expertise. It still has a long way to go, but it’s off to a good start.

For more, check ‘em out at home here.

Original Page: http://techcrunch.com/2011/11/02/quora-as-a-marketplace-evisors-raises-seed-round-to-let-startups-find-and-connect-with-experts/

Shared from Read It Later

Daily Deals: Beloved by Consumers, Less So by Merchants

Daily Deals: Beloved by Consumers, Less So by Merchants [INFOGRAPHIC]
 by Lauren Indvik, mashable.com
October 31st 2011

There are few things U.S. consumers love more than a bargain, and the spread of daily deals sites has given them plenty of their beloved and then some. Americans will spend an estimated $2 billion on daily deal sites this year alone — a figure that’s expected to double by 2015.

Merchants, however, are telling a different story. While daily deals sites are helping many businesses attract new customers, turning those new arrivals into repeat customers has proved unexpectedly difficult. Furthermore, consumers aren’t spending over the allotted amount of their deals. Businesses are taking a hit as a result.

What will this growing pattern mean for consumers, businesses and daily deals sites? It’s difficult to say. But this infographic seems to make one thing apparent: Merchants are going to need to turn elsewhere if repeat business is what they’re after.

Original Page: http://mashable.com/2011/10/31/daily-deals-infographic-3/

Shared from Read It Later

Foto: tnw.mx

Original Page: http://appleweblog.com/2011/10/infografico-las-aplicaciones-mas-populares-para-iphone

Microsoft's Envisioning Lab Reveals The Future Of Productivity

Microsoft’s Envisioning Lab Reveals The Future Of Productivity
 by Kevin Purdy, fastcompany.com
October 30th 2011

The most unbelievable part of Microsoft’s eye-catching Productivity Future Vision video, released earlier this week, isn’t the see-through refrigerator, the software app that discovers a product design breakthrough on its own, or the plants growing on the wall of the ethereally white office. (That last one, actually, is a real office on the Microsoft campus.)

No, the most unbelievable part is how clean every surface is—in the car, in the office, and even in a kitchen where a bake sale project is underway. David Jones, acting director of the video’s creator, Microsoft’s Envisioning Lab, says it’s a common criticism, but then again, nearly every surface can act as a crisp, contextually savvy display. Wouldn’t you keep your counter more clean if you could watch Hulu on it?

We interviewed Jones to glean some insights from the video, and from other work being done at the Envisioning Lab, where the job is figuring out what the future of work and computer interaction might look like, inviting customers in to test it out, and working with other divisions to gather ideas and implement them in Office and other projects—projects like HoloDesk.

Watch the video, then read on to get the details on how that future works.

See Video:

To take a stab at showing what we’ll be doing work in the future, you must have to come up with some conception of what we’ll actually be doing then. The work in the video seems pretty high-level, knowledge-based work. Is that something you anticipate a further shift towards?

Yes, we do, but that’s not everybody’s work, necessarily. One of the challenges with the video is asking ourselves, “Who are the characters? Do they need to go to an office to work? What hardware do they use, what software do they use, what does their office look like?”

We went with a green theme, work that was good for the environment, and we ended up choosing a “Greenwall,” a living plant wall that changes the atmosphere of the room. The problem with picking any particular industry—law firm, dental office, manufacturing—is that we want it to be general enough that everyone can relate to it. We have a mom who’s traveling to Johannesburg, a concierge at a hotel, an engineer providing research for a model, workers in that office … we develop the story in quite a bit of detail, actually. But what we tried to do is show people collaborating with one another, analyzing data, and making decisions.

Speech input has a really big role in the video. It’s something Microsoft sees as really important in the future, I’d take it?

The general theme is really more natural user interfaces: speech, gestures, touch.

It’s very noticeable, and the camera angle is distinctly overhead, when it shows one person actually typing on a keyboard.

Typing is one of the fastest ways to input data—test after test shows it. We’ll definitely be typing in the future. But we believe speech recognition is something we’ll see much more of in the future. But you also see a little girl hand-write a note to her mom, and the mom draws a heart shape in the air to deliver to her daughter. The best thing we could do in the future is make it easy to use whatever is the most appropriate venue for your input.

That was a theme that came up with the coverage of (iPhone 4S voice assistant) Siri—that voice input seemed so much better, but people weren’t necessarily comfortable walking down the street, saying out loud, “Remind me to buy expensive chocolate for my wife …”

You’ll notice that (video character) Qin, when he looked at a voicemail in the subway station, it provided him with a transcription of the message, and gave him a text interface to answer, rather than playing it or looking for speech.

Because it knew he was in that subway station.

It knew exactly where he was. Contextual awareness, so that the information is personalized and contextually relevant, and brought right to you. When you see the guy typing in his office, too, you notice that information was brought up to support his point while he was typing.

The second-coolest thing in the video, as I see it, is the bit where Qin, while waiting for the train, gets a list of tasks he could accomplish before his train arrives. That’s pretty nifty.

He enters what we call “Five-Minute Mode” … His devices looks through his email for simple questions he could answer. It looks for a quick voicemail he could listen and respond to. It knows he buys coffee all the time, and it knows there’s a cart right up the stairs. It suggests he call his friend for her birthday.

… People are overwhelmed by the amount of information in their lives. And computers are not quite saying yet, “Here’s what you should be doing with all that information.” We have access to all that data, all that enterprise (of people). Computers should be making people more productive, based on what they know can be done.

The coolest, of course, is the fridge you can see through, that labels everything inside it. How close are we to that?

Actually, fairly close. There’s a transparent OLED display, products with embedded information, linked to a database of recipes …

So, possible, but entirely not affordable.

Not at all affordable, but we wanted to put something fun in there. We wanted to show how you could use contextually relevant information in the most surprising of places.

Privacy isn’t brought up explicitly in the video. Is it something that isn’t a main focus of the lab?

It’s a very important issue, in fact, and we talk about it to customers in the lab constantly. You’ll notice that when Iyaz is traveling in the shuttle, she chooses to share her information with the hotel. (That) you have absolute control over how your information is used is extremely important to us … With that information, the concierge knows how many bags she’ll be bringing, how long she’s been traveling for, when she last ate, so he can provide the best possible service. That’s what’s possible, but privacy is a bit part of that.

Note: Q&A has been condensed and edited.

Original Page: http://www.fastcompany.com/1791645/qa-with-microsofts-envisioning-lab-on-the-future-of-productivity

Shared from Read It Later

Eddy J. Design

A Wearable Computer Turns Any Surface Into A Touchscreen
 fastcodesign.com | Oct 19th 2011

Chris Harrison, a PhD student in Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University, is full of interesting interface ideas. One of his latest projects is called OmniTouch, whose prototype design uses a shoulder-worn, depth-sensing camera/projector to create interactive “touchscreens” on anything from a nearby wall to your own forearm.

See Video:

The technology is amazing: OmniTouch’s screenless interface can distinguish between a touch and a “click” (i.e., a command to do something), auto-detect the size of the interface surface (e.g., it will project a short strip onto your arm, but a large rectangle onto the wall), and even recognize the orientation of the image in 3-D space (if you tilt your screen-hand toward yourself, it will consider it “private”; a more flat orientation will be deemed “public”). But oh, that rig—are normal people really going to be walking around someday with shoulder mounted screen-guns like the Predator?

Obviously, OmniTouch is a proof-of-concept and Harrison realizes that the physical setup has to be miniaturized and refined to viably offer “Wearable Multitouch Interaction Everywhere.” And the idea of turning any tactile surface into a personal computing device is exciting. But if mainstream computer-interface design is naturally tending toward the transparent and invisible—so intuitive that it quite literally disappears—schemes like OmniTouch still seem complicated and fussy. Any surface you want to “screen-ize” has to be oriented correctly toward a lens with a single perspective, the surface itself has to have appropriate attributes for receiving the projected image, and the image itself has to be clearly visible over a very wide range of lighting conditions. And what happens to the whole idea of public space when every douchebag on the street is splashing their email and Facebook clients onto the nearest wall or Starbucks counter? (You thought unwanted cellphone chatter was bad—what if you caught some perv on the subway reading their morning headlines off the back of your rump?)

Maybe advances in microlensing technology and computational photography will allow entire flexible surfaces to function as cheap, disposable camera/projectors, so worrying about whether your OmniTouch-like device is “pointed” correctly will be moot. But that’s a long way off, and this kind of sci-fi-ized interaction seems more suited to specialty applications (warfighting? EMTs?) than mainstream adoption. That said, Harrison and his cohorts are the ones who will be building the future of human-computer interaction, not armchair observers like me—so whatever he’s working on is worth taking seriously.

Original Page: http://www.fastcodesign.com/1665225/a-wearable-computer-that-turns-any-surface-into-a-touchscreen

Shared from Read It Later

Original Page: http://wwwhatsnew.com/2011/10/17/re-vu-una-forma-diferente-de-presentar-tu-perfil-profesional/

Shared from Read It Later

Chime. In: The Social Network That Pays You To Post

Chime. In: The Social Network That Pays You To Post
 huffingtonpost.com | Oct 24th 2011

While Facebook has earned billions of dollars selling ads next to the content uploaded by their 800 million members, users haven’t seen a dime from their posts.

It’s an arrangement that extends across many of the web’s largest social networking sites — and one serial entrepreneur Bill Gross plans to change.

Gross, the CEO of UberMedia, which owns several popular social networking apps, is launching a new social media site on Tuesday, Chime.in, that will effectively pay its users to contribute.

Share with Chime.in and Chime.in will share with you. The site, which allows individuals to post photos, links, videos and text in two thousand character “chimes,” will give users 50 percent of the revenue it earns from selling advertising on their profile pages. Individuals or brands that sell that real estate themselves can keep all of the proceeds from the ads.

“This is a firing shot in social media,” Gross told The Huffington Post. “Finally, the interests of the content creators are aligned with the interests of the publisher because they get something for their hard work.”

Most new social networking sites try to lure users away from rivals with the promise of better perks and more advanced features, but Chime.in is using cool hard cash to ensure people have a stake in investing time into the site and driving viewers its way. This fiscal incentive seeks to address the problem that plagues every new social media site: how to attract users before a critical mass has already joined.

“We’re relying on the crowdsourced efforts of millions of people who are interested in driving traffic to our place,” said Gross of the startup’s growth strategy. “We’re going to have great communities curated by really strong people and they’ll be driving traffic to us. We won’t have to [drive traffic] because they’ll have an economic self-interest.”

In an effort to improve the quality of its videos, YouTube has implemented a similar revenue-sharing strategy that rewards users who upload popular content. Though paying people to post is hardly a sure bet, Gross maintains that money will actually improve the quality of the content on Chime.in.

“When money is involved, you will get a level of seriousness that is not there when there is no money involved,” he said.

Chime.in also offers a solution for brands that have yet to figure out how to leverage their Facebook “likes” or Twitter followers to improve their bottom line. So far, Disney, E! Entertainment, Universal Pictures and Bravo TV have signed up with Chime.in to create branded pages they could eventually use to turn a profit.

“Celebrities, movie studios, TV shows and publishing companies will want to make pages here because unlike with a page on Facebook, they can achieve monetization adjacent to the content itself, not only through a link,” said Gross. “Not everyone follows a link posted on Facebook.”

Gross claims that Chime.in — which he calls an “interest network,” not a social network — further improves on existing social media sites by offering a design that weeds out “noise” and shows only relevant content.

The site allows users to tag their chimes with up to five “interests,” such as “Apple” or “architecture,” and lets people subscribe to updates about a particular topic, essentially a stream of “chimes” that are aggregated based on the tags authors have added to their posts. As on Twitter, users can subscribe to each others’ feeds, though Chime.in offers additional control over what appears in their “chimeline”: Individuals can choose to receive only updates pertaining to a particular subject, so people interested in a pundit’s take on technology won’t be stuck hearing from him about artisanal cheeses from an outing to a farmers’ market.

“This platform is not just about urgent news and keeping up with friends and relatives. It’s about diving into interests,” said Gross. “People are moving away from searching the web to connecting with people and they’ll tell me what I need to know.”

The idea is intriguing, but the execution, at least in the beta version of the site, leaves much to be desired. People can add unrelated tags to their chimes, and a visit to several topics revealed posts about ramen and tomato sauce in a channel ostensibly dedicated to chimes about Google. Chime.in claims its algorithm will “bring quality content to the surface” and prioritize the best chimes, though it’s easy to imagine scammers will find ways to promote low-quality posts—especially with money at stake.

The most interesting aspect of Gross’s pay-you-to-post model may not what it does for Chime.in, but for sites like Facebook and Twitter. When users catch wind of the offer, will they sour on social networking sites that aren’t sharing their loot? The biggest question Chime.in may raise is: Why isn’t Facebook paying me?

SEE what Chime.in looks like before the launch:

Original Page: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/17/chimein-social-network_n_1016634.html

Shared from Read It Later
